Simpson shines in win at NAZ

RB scores 4 TDs to pace Panthers

Box Score PRESCOTT VALLEY, AZ--Shane Simpson scored four touchdowns to lead the Bay Area Panthers to a 39-36 win over the Northern Arizona Wranglers in a match-up of the last two Indoor Football League champions.

The Panthers (6-1) remain one game behind Vegas in the Western Conference after a bounce-back effort following their first loss since June 24.

"Really proud of our team tonight.  Prescott Valley is a tough place to play," said Bay Area Head Coach Rob Keefe.  "Crowd noise, altitude and always a solid well-coached team at NAZ."

Simpson ran for 72 yards on 10 carries with two scores and added 50 yards on four receptions with two more touchdowns.  Simpson's heroics came one week after a 62-43 loss to Vegas.

"Nobody wants to lose but I think we needed that to see who we are as a team," said Simpson.  "We could have folded tonight and lost again but had a bounce-back win in hostile territory.  People don't know that it's hard to breathe at Northern Arizona so I applaud the team for pushing through."

The Panthers took the lead for good on Daquan Neal's 7-yard scoring pass to Simpson for a 33-27 lead with 9:58 to play in the fourth.  The TD capped a 35-yard drive over seven plays and nearly five minutes of time off the clock.

On the next series, the defense responded by holding the Wranglers to a 45-yard field goal from Axel Perez that cut the lead to 33-30.

Bay Area added to the margin on Simpson's fourth and final touchdown--a 24-yard scoring run for a 39-30 lead with 1:20 to play.

"It's a blessing to play football, being a pro and being a part of that one percent--still chasing my dreams to get back to the NFL," said Simpson.  "I can't take all the credit because it's a team sport.  I thank the coaches, my teammates and the front office.  It's always a team effort."

Quarterback Daquan Neal ended 10-14 for 117 yards and three scores.

Tyler Watson paced the defense with 7.5 tackles and former Wranglers' linebacker Darin Hungerford recorded 6.5 tackles with 2.5 tackles for loss and one sack. Defensive back Desmond Williams had four solo stops and assisted on four others.

"It was a great team win and everyone was locked in," said Hungerford.  "That was a great way to bounce back from last week.  We had a great week of practice to prepare so it was no surprise that practice carried over to the game."

In the loss for Northern Arizona (4-3), Joshua Jones was 17-26 for 160 yards and two scores.  David Elder was Jones' favorite target with seven catches for 31 yards.  Jones added 36 yards rushing and a pair of touchdowns.

"Our guys fought hard, stayed together and executed all night.  Great team win to get us back on track," said Keefe.

The Panthers will be on the road next Saturday at Arizona while the Wranglers travel to Massachusetts.
